How to play
Players stand at opposite ends of the table. The bottom team scores over the top edge; the top team scores over the bottom edge.
Coin toss. The winner gets the ball first, so the other side kicks off.
Kickoff. Flick the ball down the table from your own edge. If it falls off, or comes to rest hanging over the receiver's edge, kick again.
Touchdown, 6 points. Flick the ball so part of it hangs over your opponent's edge without falling off. The app checks it with a ruler.
Field goal, 3 points. Tap Field goal and kick through your opponent's hands, held in a U with the thumbs together. It has to clear the thumbs and pass between the fingers.
Taking turns. If the ball goes out of bounds or falls off the table, the other player takes possession where it went off.
Winning. Most points at the end of the game wins.
House rules (Locker room). Long touchdown bonus: +1 for a touchdown flick of 20 in or more, +2 for 30 in or more. Kickoff penalty: a kickoff that goes off the table gives the other side the ball at midfield instead of a re-kick.
ABS challenges (app house rule, on by default). On a close touchdown or field goal the ref makes the call, and the side it went against has 6 seconds to tap Challenge. After any play, the side it went against can also tap Flag on its scoreboard before the next flick, like an NFL coach. The tracking system reviews the play and the true call wins. Each side gets 2 challenges a game and keeps one it wins.
How to flick
Put a finger anywhere on the table, pull back away from where you want the ball to go, and let go. The longer the pull, the harder the flick. Hard flicks wobble more, just like a real finger.
What the app decides
The league rules leave a few things open. Here is how this app plays them: after any score the scoring side kicks off; a missed field goal gives the ball to the other side at their own end; a tie when time runs out goes to sudden death. Choose "Trade flicks" for one flick each, or "4 flicks per possession" for the backyard version.
